Raw Gluten-Free Creamy Oatmeal Porridge Recipe

~ raw, vegan, gluten-free, nut-free ~

Since this porridge requires but a little (very little) prep time, it will be a breeze come morning to pull this dish together.  My mother is here visiting, and I made this for her breakfast, and she just loved it.

She said it hit the spot perfectly.  And it was so easy to make she will probably make it once she gets home, for her it has to be easy, or it just won’t happen. :)

Ingredients:

Yields 2 1/2 cups

Preparation:

  1. Soak oats overnight and then drain, rinsing them till the water runs clear.
  2. In a blender combine the oats, chia seeds, water,  and raisins.  Blend until creamy.
  3. Add the chopped apple, cinnamon and salt.  Blend until creamy.
  4. Optional:  Top porridge with more raisins, diced apple, and sprinkle some cinnamon on top.

I’m just gonna have to break down and try the chia seeds that I have! Why I am scared of those little beads is anyones guess! This recipe sounds yummy…. Im just going to TRY IT !!! I will post back my results :o)

You can do it Chrissy! :) I danced around them for a few years myself. Not sure why but now they are a part of my daily recipes! They don’t have a taste really but they lend a great texture, thicken recipes and have a great nutrient profile. I just got my shipment not to long ago. Somehow I ordered from 2 places at the same time and now I have 8 lbs of chia seeds! lol So be watchful for more recipes. Let me know how it goes for you. Blessings, amie sue

Are you leaving the oats out to soak or refrigerating them?

    • amie-sue says:

Kim, I modified the recipe since I learned the importance of soaking oats overnight to remove the phytic acid. Please refer to the recipe, it should clear up your questions. Have a great weekend!

Annie Sue you have outdone yourself once again! I have tried many raw oatmeal dishes and wasn’t impressed…this one was awesome! I used soaked oat groats..and topped it with ripe banan and raisins…soooo yummy! I have a new breakfast dish! yay!

    • amie-sue says:

Mmmm, that sounds delightful Dee! There is something so comforting about oatmeal. Have a blessed day and thank you for sharing!

Either I read the recipe incorrectly or there is something wrong. Tried this just now and it was more of a drink then a porridge! Too much liquid me thinks. The recipe says soak the oats in 2 cups of warm water, done. Then blend with 1 1/2 cups of water, at this point it turned into a drink rather than a porridge

    • amie-sue says:

Hmmm Melanie…. I am not sure why it was liquidity for you. After soaking the oats did you drain and rinse the them before adding to the blender with the 1 1/2 cups of water?

    Hi Amie-Sue, how are you?
Your range of recipes is absolutely endless :-)
I see so much excitement here that I guess I should try this one too.
But… what did you do with the chia seeds? They are on the list of ingredients.
    Love
    Pilar

Pilar… so good to hear from you! It has been a while. :) I hope all is well. I added the chia seeds into the preparation list… thank you for pointing that out for me to fix! ;) have a blessed evening, amie sue

Yes, all is well, just taking it easier with raw foods and spending time in the kitchen. Recently I’ve been keeping it simple: salads, smoothies… But when it comes to breakfast I really need something comforting, but I wanna keep it simple, just like your mom ;-))
Thank you for adding the chia seeds, I assume they don’t have to soak first
    A big hug to you

    • amie-sue says:

I understand Pilar. :) I go through my phases as well. It so good that you recognize the need to tend to yourself and take things easy. :) If you make the porridge, you can let it sit for 10 minutes to activate the chai seeds. It doesn’t take them long to swell up :) Hugs to you too! Have a great week. amie sue

Ok, mission accomplished! It was wonderful and very comforting. Next time I’ll cut a bit the honey, though, as I prefer it less sweet. But again, it could have also been the apples. But it was yummy, I’ll definitely make it again, thank you :-)

Hey amie I absolutely love your website. Say if I wanted the oatmeal warm could I put the finished recipe In a dehydrator are would I just have to cook the oats. I love the recipe I am just so used to eating oatmeal warm. Any ideas?

    • amie-sue says:

      Hello Matt,

Yes, you could certainly put the oats in the dehydrator before eating. ALso, heating the bowl you serve it in will help. I love warm oats too. Enjoy! amie sue

  9. Rhonda Tantalo says:

Hi Amie-sue, Rhonda here. Hope this finds you well. I wondered if I can use the dehydrated oats. I soaked 1 cup overnight and dehydrated them so I would have them already prepared. I didn’t want to make 2 1/2 cups worth just 1/4 of that for my breakfast. So can I use the dehydrated oats then add the water and other ingredients to the blender?

    • amie-sue says:

You bet Rhonda… that will work just fine. If need be you can them soak a bit to soften up and not have to worry about rinsing and draining them because you have gone through all of that already. Way to be prepared! Have a blessed day… off to work I go! amie sue
