Loving Thy Liver Slushy

Loving Thy Liver Slushie~ raw, vegan, gluten-free, nut-free ~

This has become a favorite drink of mine.  I start off with a full jar and drink it throughout the day.  My goal is to drink 1/2 to 1 gallon a day.   Keeping your liver healthy is so important.  Loving Thy Liver Slushy is a wonderful drink that you can make to show your liver just how much you appreciate it! And since there are not any Hallmark cards for this occasion… this is the next best way to show your love.  They say that the liver is the second most important organ in the body, coming in second only to the heart!

Dandelion tea alone can taste bitter and sweet all at the same time, lemon juice alone can cause massive pucker power, unsweetened cranberry juice… well, I don’t think I need to explain that one… but if you bring all these flavors together and add a little stevia, perfection!  I actually love the taste of this refreshing drink and it makes me feel good knowing that I am sending a message of love to my liver.

Before I get to all the amazing reasons why this is good for you, I want to do a special shout-out for my new favorite straws!!  At first, I wasn’t sure if I would like them, because I am a recovering straw chewing kind of gal.  But I have been converted!

There are many reasons why I love them but one neat effect is, that they give is that as the cold drink travels through the straw, the stainless steel makes it seem even colder!  Go “green”! Let’s take baby steps in our lives to reduce the waste that goes into our landfill.  So instead of throwing away all those plastic straws, you can reuse these over and over and over…  They add an elegant touch to parties too. They are angled and 8 1/2 inches long.  Just love them!

Dandelion Tea

Lemon

Cranberry Juice (unsweetened)

  • Cranberry juice is rich in vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, which thins and decongest bile, allowing your liver to metabolize fats more efficiently.  Vitamin C also boosts the production of glutathione, the key antioxidant your liver needs during both stages of its detoxification process.  This nutrient is also an effective chelating agent, which means it binds to toxic drugs and metals to make it easier for your liver and body to remove them.  Finally, vitamin C is an antioxidant, so it helps to protect the liver from free radicals that damage cells and tissues.

Ingredients:

Yields 1/2 gallon

Preparation:

  1. In a pitcher or 1/2 gallon mason jar (my favorite) place the tea bag, lemon juice, cranberry juice, and stevia.  Fill with water and put in the fridge.
    • I leave the teabag in the jar at all times.
    • Throughout the day, you can just pour yourself a tall glass of this tea and enjoy or you can take it to the next step, which I thoroughly enjoy.
  2. In a blender, pour in 8 oz of tea mixture, ice, and 1/2 of a peeled lemon.  Be sure to remove the seeds from the lemon and to peel it.  Leave as much as the white pith on the lemon as possible, it is so good for you.
  3. Blend to a nice slushy consistency.  Pour and enjoy!!

I was intrigued by the stainless steel straws until I read the reviews. It appears that they contain nickel, and apparently, if you have a nickel sensitivity (like many do), it alters the taste of water, and can have some uncomfortable side effects. Do you know anything about whether or not this is true?

      Hi Barbara,

I have been doing some reading after your comment was posted. I saw the comment that someone left on Amazon that you are referring to. I have no idea as to the truth of their statements. I suppose if a person has sensitivities to nickel, then this is worth investigating. Goodness, there is always something with everything, isn’t there? If you have issues or concerns with this for you, I would try the glass straws. Personally, I don’t notice any odd taste from the stainless straws and I use them everyday and have for months. I will need to research this a bit more.

I want to know where you found the cool jar with the straw hole in the lid? Love, Love, Love your website!

    • amie-sue says:

      Good morning Janis,
I am thrilled that you are enjoying the web-site. :) I made that jar.

      1 quart mason canning jar
      1 lid
Drilled a 5/8″ hole in the lid
      Squeezed in a grommet
      and popped a straw in!

Is there some way to make my own dandelion tea bags? I have lots of dandelions and a dehydrator. Confused as to whether the dandelion tea is made from the leaves or the roots? Thanks for this recipe. I have been doing the liver flush and shocked as to the amount of stones leaving my liver. Love to have a drink like this to help my liver to continue to heal.

    • amie-sue says:

Althea, I know people do make their own tea bags but I haven’t. I did some Google searches and there is a lot of information out there regarding it so you can easily investigate it. Enjoy and have a grand weekend, amie sue

One question, does the recipe follows the same principle as cold press coffee? i just did not get whether the preparation of the tea uses hot or cold water. Thank you!

    • amie-sue says:

      Hello Martha,

What I do is place the tea bag in a half gallon jar, pour a little hot water in it and let it sit while I prepare the lemon juice. Then I add the lemon and cranberry juice, then add water to fill the jar and let it sit for a little bit. I keep the tea bag in the jar all day while I am pouring some off to drink. You can take the tea bag out at any time if you find it becoming to strong of a taste for you. I hope this helped. amie sue

Wonderful drink! Tastes fabulous too! Makes drinking lemon water a whole lot more pleasant! I shared this with my nutritionist so she could share it with her other clients. Thanks Amie Lynn for a terrific website!

  10. Brigitte says:

    Hi Amy
I was just wondering, can frozen or dried cranberries be also used here?

    • amie-sue says:

      Hello Brigitte,

Yes, you could if need be. I would soak them in warm water until really soft before blending with the rest of the drink. That way the blender will be able to really incorporate the cranberries into the drink. blessings, amie sue
