Rethink Your Greens Smoothie

~ raw, vegan, gluten-free, nut-free ~

Today’s smoothie is all about rethinking your greens, and I am not referring to the different hues that the color green comes in.  This morning I woke thinking about what my morning smoothie was going to be like.

I am trying more and more to really listen to my body to see if I can recognize what it is asking for.  Use to be a day when rice crispy bars had a huge calling within me, but my body has shifted.  It literally craves greens, veggies of all sorts, and fruits.

As I was rummaging through my cabinets, I stumbled upon a container of Innate Women’s +40 Greens powder that I was taking last spring.  I sort of forgot I still had some left.  I had gotten out of the habit of taking it when we were traveling.  I decided to add it to today’s smoothie.

I put some product info on it down below. It’s pretty darn amazing.  So this morning, here I sat chewing my smoothie and thinking about all the green power that was in it and asked myself why.

Why do I love all this green stuff, why do I love all these amazing powerhouse foods that I am adding to my smoothies and the short answer is….it is what my body wants, and when you supply your body what it is craving it is all that much more pleasurable!  It satisfies the taste buds, the ritual, the tummy, the mind, and the soul.  It’s just downright nourishing to my body on all levels.  So use these recipes as simple guidelines.  Put ingredients into your smoothies that you are drawn to that very moment and enjoy it!

Smoothie Tips

Blending fruits and vegetables together breaks down the cells of plants and improves digestibility. BUT even with that, be sure to chew your smoothies.  The chewing process starts the release of the saliva in your mouth.  The mixture of saliva and your food is where digestion begins.  This is a very healthy habit to get into.  It may feel strange at first, but soon it will become an automatic response.

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. In the blender combine the water and spinach.  Blend until the spinach is broke down.
    • The first thing to add to your blender is the liquid.  This will the greens move more freely when blending.
    • Blending in stages prevents chunks.
  2. Add the frozen banana, mango, cinnamon, Women’s +, protein powder, lemon juice, sweetener, and salt.  Blend until smooth.
    • I always recommend frozen bananas over fresh.  Make a habit out of storing overripe, peeled bananas in the freezer for future smoothies.
    • A dash of a high-quality salt will increase the minerals and improve the taste of your smoothie.
    • A good green smoothie should be perfectly smooth.

I make the best green smoothies and the secret is to freeze your fresh spinach and your fresh fruit.
When I make a smoothie it is for my son, my husband and me my vitamix blender is full.
    Ready ?
    32oz. water
    1 tbs. coconut mana
    1 tbs. coconut oil
    2 tbs. lacuma
2 scoops Sun Warrior Protien Powder (vanilla or neutral)
    1 tsp. vitamineral greens
    1 tsp. ormus greens
    2 Handsful of frozen spinach
    4 or 5 frozen bananas

Start off with the water, then add all ingredients leaving the spinach and bananas for last. place lid on vitamix and blend on max speed until blended. I hope you enjoy it. The banana is my favorite but I also make it with strawberry, and mixed organic berries, sometimes I add half an avocado to it. This is often my lunch for work for a 13 hour shift along with a couple of pieces of fruit. God Bless Carol

I freeze the spinach to make the drink cold so I don’t have to add ice it works out well .I buy fresh spinach and freeze it not already frozen spinach .

would not the spinach lose a lot of its nutritional value after being frozen?

    • amie-sue says:

I believe that some nutrients can be lost when we freeze foods. Optimally, fresh is always the best but if it isn’t available, I don’t mind using organic frozen foods once in a while. amie sue

also spinach is not that great as a main source of greens.. it can actually prohibit the production of iron in the body.. best to vary your green veg as much as poss…

    • amie-sue says:

Spinach has its place and nutrients. It is a good one to include in your diet but I agree that it is best to vary your greens making sure you get a well balance of minerals and vitamins. :) Have a great evening, amie sue

    dear Amie Sue
    Thank you always.
Raw spinach I hear that when you eat spinach raw, it has oxalic acid and combines with calcium to form stones. What do you think about eating raw spinach? I have never felt uneasy about eating spinach raw. However, I was curious and asked a question. Good morning Sunny :)

Great question and one that has popped up over the years. I believe that eating raw spinach has no harm as long as you have a balanced diet and as long as you don’t have certain health issues that could be exasperated by eating raw spinach. I do know that people who are taking blood-thinning medications need to be careful due to the vitamin K found in spinach. If you are at risk for calcium oxalate kidney stones then you would want to eat a more controlled amount. According to the “Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry,” they conducted studies in the area and concluded that boiling and steaming may be an effective cooking strategy to decrease the risk of high urinary oxalates in people who are at risk of developing kidney stones.

If you don’t have any preexisting health conditions, I honestly believe that any food can become detrimental to your health if eaten in too much abundance. I say that because when a person eats copious amounts of one food, it leads to a very unbalanced diet.

I personally don’t have a problem eating raw spinach. I either add it to a smoothie or chopped up with other greens for my salads. I also eat it steamed. If you feel that you might be at risk, then I would talk to your wellness practitioner. I hope this helped a bit. blessings, amie sue
