This freshly made Sweet and Spicy Detox Juice is perfect to serve in shot glasses

~ raw, vegan, gluten-free, nut-free ~

Sweet and Spicy Detox Juice is made from freshly harvested beetroots, ripe, crisp apples, and freshly sliced ginger root. It is uniquely sweet, earthy, with a kick of heat.

When juicing with beets choose firm, small, and smooth ones. Avoid beets that are either soft or shriveled.  The smaller the beet, the sweeter it is.  Beets are known to cause both stools and urine to turn red so if this happens, don’t be surprised.

Never drink beet juice by itself.  Beet juice should always be mixed with other vegetables and/or apple juice. Pure beet juice (from the bulb or greens) can temporarily paralyze your vocal chords, make you break out in hives, increase your heart rate, cause chills or a fever.

Don’t forget your greens

Spinach is high in vitamin A and C and is one of only four vegetables that are also high in vitamin E, the others being chard, broccoli, and asparagus.  It’s also an excellent source of choline, calcium, iron, potassium and folic acid.

It is surprisingly high in protein per calorie.   Now, to add a little sweetness to the juice lets add in apples which are a good source of vitamin C, and high in pectin and other fibers.  Lastly, a splash of ginger juice will warm the body, promoting healthy sweating, which not only assists detoxification but also boosts the immune system.

When consuming this drink, I recommend small shots at first, so you don’t end up with a cleansing reaction. This has happened to me in the past when I couldn’t control my, all or nothing, mentality. Juice tends to oxidize quickly. As this happens, the levels of nutrients begin to fall. This is why it is so important to drink juice as soon as possible after you make it. Some juicers work better than others at keeping oxidation at bay, allowing you to make enough juice to last a couple of days in the refrigerator.  However, the sooner you drink it, the more nutritional value it has. I hope you enjoy this recipe. Blessings to you and your loved ones. amie sue

Hi, Amie do you know what I can do for a master cleanse not the one with lemon and juice something that will work in couple of days.

    Thanks Barb.

Hello Barbara, I am not sure what you normally eat to know what would be considered a cleanse for you but you can always do a few days of juicing to help cleanse your body. If possible try to use more greens than fruits since they are so high in natural sugars. You can do green smoothies or just juices, both have their pluses and minuses. But for a short cleanse I opt for juicing. Good luck on your cleanse! amie sue

OMG, just made this for hubby and me and it was delicious. I didn’t have to add the stevia. I think because the beets were so small and the organic ginger so fresh that helped. Thank you, thank you, for your wonderful and healthy recipes.

    • amie-sue says:

OOH awesome Marlys!! I am thrilled that you both tried and liked it. :) Music to my ears. hehe The stevia is optional… I tend to have more of a sweet tooth so I add stevia to things. I am hoping to reduce my sweet tooth over time. hehe Have a blessed evening! amie sue

I notice that when i find a green juice or otherwise people use an apple, is that for sweetness, because i do not mix fruits and vegetables at the same meal. but I can use pineapple with vegetables. Would like your advice.

    • amie-sue says:

      Hello Linda,

Yes, people are adding the apple to sweeten the green juice. I know that normally fruit and veggies don’t mix well in food combining but it tends to be different when it comes to juicing or making smoothies. Basically due to the fact that the liquid form of them together starts to predigest them and makes it easy on the digestive system. But the bottom line is… you need to see what works best for your digestive system. :) Have a great evening, amie sue

Would beet tops be just as good as using spinach?

    • amie-sue says:

They would work too Grace, they taste a little like Swiss chard so they might be a little stronger in flavor but they are full of nutrients. Enjoy and bottoms up! amie sue
